Tamba Ceramics Now
Ceramic Exhibition by Ichino Masahiko

Open 11:00 to 18:00 (closed Sun/Mon)
Artist available July 5th to 7th

We all know the fabled history of the Six Old Kilns. The ancient kiln sites of Bizen, Shigaraki, Seto, Echizen, Tokoname and Tamba were all happily grouped together, albeit it falsely, by none other than the great potter/scholar Koyama Fujio. But as we enjoy parsimony in various aspects of life, allusions and illusions of Six Old Kilns make for explicitly simple understanding.

Tamba had lagged behind some of its more prestigious siblings, in particular Bizen, Shigaraki and Seto, perhaps due to a lack of inspired artists. But as Bizen has its own share of stars like Kakurezaki Ryuichi and Mori Togaku, the same can be said of Tamba, and the star is Ichino Masahiko 市野雅彦 (1961- ).

He is the wild child and flamboyant revolutionary of contemporary Tamba, and he is indeed kicking up a storm of awards, with his most famous mention of late being the Japanese Ceramic Association Award in 2005. Ichino has expanded the boundaries of what Tamba can be, esp. in regards to using traditional techniques to create brilliantly imaginative forms.

Please visit Tamba extraordinaire Ichino Masahiko's exhibition, held at Tokyo's Yufuku Gallery (www.yufuku.net, or look at maps below) from July 5th to the 14th. We hope you enjoy his new works.

A New Beginning
Exhibition of Japanese Pottery by Celebrated
Artist Ken Mihara 三原研

June 7th (Thur) - 16th (Sat)
Open 11:00 to 18:00 (closed Sunday/Monday)
Artist available June 7th - 9th

Yufuku and Toku Art proudly presents the exhibition of new works by celebrated Japanese ceramicist Mihara Ken (1958- ), entitled "Kigen- -A New Beginning,"to be held from June 7th (Thur) to June 16th (Sat) at Yufuku Gallery, Tokyo.

Born and bred in Izumo, a land coloured with the mysticism and mythology of ancient Japan, Mihara's ceramics embody the same primeval, even pristine clarity that, in essence, is Japanese spirituality.

His sublime forms and firings have garnered acclaim both in Japan and abroad, with an exhibition schedule featuring dates in New York and London in 2008 (venues revealed at a later date).

"Kigen -A New Beginning" finds Mihara pursuing unchartered waters. Unlike his previous works, Mihara challenges the new technique of multi-firing his pieces, in order to achieve colours and hues of purple, grey, brown and blue that have never before been seen in his works.

This new technique requires extreme skill and determination, as over 80 percent of the fired works are destroyed in the kiln. Even the 20% that survive are not always of a quality suitable for exhibition. Only the best forms (all new) have been selected for "Kigen". Hence the exhibition's name, "A New Beginning."

Mihara, a quiet and mysterious potter, calls himself "easily bored." Such is why he finds himself perpetually attempting new frontiers in his art. His art, at once contemplative and subtle, reveals the depth of Mihara himself.

We hope you enjoy his latest, and perhaps most spirited, collection, at Yufuku Gallery from June 7th to 16th.

Toku Art and Yufuku Gallery proudly present the works of one of Japan's most highly acclaimed metal artists, Takahiro Yede (家出隆浩 1962- ).

His works shatter our preconceptions of metal, for at a glance, his works brim with the playful texture of fabric. The artist has taken traditional Japanese metal techniques to new heights, especially by his ingenious and unique invention of weaving strips of metal together to form elegant tapestries of metal.

Coupled with his soft palette of colours, his works have brought about a revolution in how we perceive this ancient Japanese artform. Perhaps such is why the revered traditional craft competition in Japan, the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (Japanese Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition), has showered the artist with some of its top prizes, as well as being purchased by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo at the age of 33.

Already solidifying his status domestically, the international scene has been quick to follow Yede's career. With an innovative vigour and curiosity unparalleled amongst his peers, his passion for his art will soon transcend borders. From eastern skies, to the world. Takahiro Yede.
